Sigma's earlier 500mm super-telephoto — the f/4.5 EX APO for Nikon F professional wildlife.
The Sigma 500mm f/4.5 EX APO DG HSM is an earlier-generation super-telephoto prime for Nikon F mount. At 500mm f/4.5, it provides extreme reach with a relatively fast aperture. The APO elements ensure chromatic correction. HSM motor provides fast AF. This was Sigma's flagship super-telephoto before the later 500mm f/4 Sports (IDs 3485, 3504).
Optical performance is good for the generation. Sharpness is very good from f/4.5 with the APO elements controlling chromatic aberration. The f/4.5 is half a stop slower than the later f/4 Sports version. HSM motor provides fast, quiet AF with full-time manual override. Compatible with Sigma teleconverters. Tripod collar included.
Nikon F mount. Filter thread uses a rear drop-in holder. Weight is approximately 3,150 grams — very heavy. Build quality is professional EX grade. No image stabilisation — the main practical limitation vs later OS-equipped models. A tripod or gimbal is essential. The 500mm reach is genuine super-telephoto territory for wildlife and sports.
Available at very attractive used prices — superseded by the 500mm f/4 Sports. Check AF motor, optics, and tripod collar. A capable super-telephoto at dramatic savings versus the Sports version. The lack of OS is the main practical drawback. Best for tripod-based wildlife and sports work in good light.
