Sigma's 70-200mm f/2.8 for Sony A — the non-OS APO version with macro capability.
The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG HSM APO Macro II is the Sony A-mount version of Sigma's non-stabilised constant-aperture telephoto zoom, also described in other mounts. The APO designation with SLD elements provides good chromatic aberration control. The Macro suffix indicates closer-than-normal focusing. HSM motor provides quiet AF on A-mount.
Optical performance is good. Centre sharpness is very good from f/2.8. The constant aperture provides consistent exposure and DOF throughout the zoom range. The HSM motor is quieter than Sony's body-drive AF, a practical advantage. APO elements control colour fringing effectively. Bokeh is smooth at wider apertures for portrait and event work.
Sony A mount. Filter thread is 77mm. Weight is approximately 1,370 grams — heavy. Build quality is solid with EX professional construction. No image stabilisation — benefits from Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE on compatible bodies. Tripod collar included. The A-mount system is discontinued but adapts to E-mount via LA-EA adapters.
Available at very low used prices. Check AF accuracy and smooth zoom. The lack of OS is partially compensated by Sony body stabilisation. Best for well-lit sports and event photography on A-mount bodies. The declining A-mount demand keeps prices very attractive for the constant f/2.8 specification.
