Sigma's budget full-frame telephoto zoom with macro — basic 70-300mm with APO glass.
The Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 APO DG Macro is a budget telephoto zoom for full-frame DSLRs with APO (Apochromatic) glass and a macro mode. It provides basic telephoto reach with slightly better chromatic aberration control than non-APO alternatives.
Optically basic — acceptable centre sharpness at mid-focal lengths but soft at 300mm. APO glass helps reduce chromatic aberration. Macro mode provides useful close-up capability between 200-300mm. No image stabilisation. AF is adequate but not fast.
Canon EF mount with 58mm filter thread. Approximately 545g. Full-frame coverage. No weather sealing. DG designation means full-frame optimised. Macro mode reaches approximately 1:2 magnification at 300mm. Minimum focus distance 150cm normal, 95cm macro.
Very cheap used. The lack of stabilisation is the main limitation. The Sigma 70-300mm OS version added stabilisation and is much more practical. Canon and Nikon 70-300mm IS/VR lenses are superior. Only for absolute budget needs.
