Sigma's budget telephoto zoom with macro capability, available in many mounts.
The Sigma 70-300mm f/4-5.6 DG Macro is a long-running budget telephoto zoom available for most DSLR mounts, first released around 2000. Covering the classic 70-300mm range with a macro mode at 200-300mm providing 1:2 magnification, it offers affordable telephoto reach across multiple camera systems.
Optical quality is basic with acceptable sharpness at shorter focal lengths but significant softness above 200mm. Chromatic aberration is visible. There is no image stabilisation. The macro mode at the telephoto end is a useful feature absent from most budget telephotos. Autofocus is functional but slow and noisy.
Available in Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony A, Pentax K, and Sigma SA mounts. Filter thread is 58mm. Multiple variants exist with slightly different designations including the DG Macro, APO DG Macro, and APO Macro Super. Check which version you are buying.
Very cheap used in all mounts. Check AF operation and macro mode engagement. The lens is adequate for casual telephoto use but any stabilised alternative is a worthwhile upgrade. The macro mode adds versatility that pure telephoto zooms lack.
