Sigma's flagship 85mm portrait Art prime for Nikon F — reference-class optics at a competitive price.
The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art was released in 2016 and immediately set new benchmarks for 85mm portrait lens performance. Part of Sigma's celebrated Art line, it competes directly with Canon's 85mm f/1.4L II and Nikon's 85mm f/1.4G while frequently matching or exceeding their optical performance at a significantly lower price point.
Optical performance is outstanding. Sharpness is exceptional from f/1.4 across most of the frame — genuinely remarkable for a fast portrait lens. Bokeh is beautifully smooth with nine rounded aperture blades creating circular highlights. The Art line optical design with multiple glass-moulded aspherical elements virtually eliminates sagittal coma and spherical aberration.
Nikon F mount. Filter thread is 86mm — very large. Weight is approximately 1,130 grams — heavy for an 85mm prime, reflecting the complex optical design. Build quality is excellent with TSC construction and brass bayonet mount. HSM motor provides fast, quiet autofocus. No weather sealing. The Sigma USB Dock enables focus fine-tuning.
Good availability on the used market at attractive prices. Check AF accuracy — critical for an 85mm f/1.4. The weight is significant and affects balance on lighter camera bodies. One of the finest 85mm lenses ever made — the combination of Art line optics, fast AF, and competitive pricing made it the default 85mm recommendation for years.
