Sigma's stellar full-frame portrait prime for mirrorless, rivalling lenses costing twice as much.
The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art was announced in September 2020, designed specifically for the mirrorless form factor — distinct from the earlier 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art (2014), which was adapted from a DSLR optical design. The DN designation indicates a native mirrorless mount without mechanical focus coupling; the linear AF motor is fast and silent. Available in Sony E-mount and L-Mount, it competes directly with Sony's G Master FE 85mm f/1.4 at a significantly lower price.
The optical design uses 15 elements in 11 groups, including five special dispersion elements and one aspherical element. The 77mm filter thread is the professional standard size, compatible with most established filter collections. At 630g the lens is heavy for an 85mm prime — lighter than the Sony G Master but substantially heavier than the Sony FE 85mm f/1.8. Minimum focus distance of 0.77m is standard for an 85mm portrait prime, suitable for head-and-shoulders framing. The linear AF motor is fast and near-silent. Build is metal and quality plastic with weather and dust resistance throughout.
As a portrait prime the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art delivers wide aperture subject isolation and smooth background rendering on full-frame Sony E-mount and L-Mount bodies. At f/1.4 the centre is sharp with characteristic light falloff toward the frame edges; from f/2 sharpness is strong across the frame. The linear motor AF is fast enough for portrait tracking including eye-detection on current Sony A7-series bodies. Build quality is consistent with Sigma's Art line — solid and confidence-inspiring for professional use.
On the used market the 85mm f/1.4 DG DN Art represents a strong value proposition against its Sony G Master counterpart. Condition checks: linear motor AF response, aperture blade operation, and weather sealing at the mount. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.8 provides comparable portrait coverage at substantially lower weight and cost, trading the f/1.4 aperture. The Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 G Master is the premium alternative with marginally better optical performance at a higher price. For photographers prioritising f/1.4 at a controlled cost in the Sony FE or L-Mount ecosystem, the Sigma Art is the primary option.
