Sigma's pre-Art 85mm f/1.4 portrait prime — HSM motor with good bokeh, predecessor to the legendary Art version.
The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM launched in 2008 as Sigma's premium portrait prime for full-frame DSLRs, predating the Art lineup. It offered f/1.4 speed with HSM autofocus at a lower price than Canon and Nikon's own 85mm f/1.4 lenses.
Optically good — sharp from f/2 with pleasant bokeh at f/1.4. The EX designation indicates professional build quality. HSM motor is fast and quiet. Some longitudinal chromatic aberration wide open but acceptable for portrait work. Good rendering for the era.
Canon EF mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 725g. No weather sealing. Full-frame coverage. Minimum focus distance 85cm. 9 rounded aperture blades. EX-series metal barrel construction.
Available used very cheaply. The Sigma 85mm f/1.4 DG HSM Art replaced it with dramatically superior optics. The Canon 85mm f/1.4L IS and Nikon 85mm f/1.4G are also better. Only worth considering at bargain prices. Check AF accuracy — use USB dock if available.
