A vintage Soligor T2-mount preset telephoto adapted to Canon EF — a budget curiosity for long reach.
The Soligor 400mm f/6.3 T2 Preset is a vintage telephoto lens originally made with a T2 universal mount, here adapted to Canon EF. Soligor was a Japanese brand that produced affordable third-party lenses through the 1970s and 1980s. The T2 mount system allowed a single lens to be adapted to virtually any camera system via inexpensive adapter rings.
Optical performance is basic by modern standards. Sharpness is acceptable in the centre when stopped down but soft at the edges. The f/6.3 maximum aperture is very slow, limiting the lens to bright daylight or tripod use. The preset aperture mechanism requires manual operation — set the desired aperture, then click it closed before shooting. No auto-aperture coupling.
T2 mount adapted to Canon EF — the lens has no electronic communication with the camera body. Filter thread varies by version. Weight is approximately 600 grams. Build quality is basic metal construction. Manual focus only with a preset aperture ring. The 400mm focal length provides significant reach for wildlife and airshow work in good light.
Occasionally found on the used market at very low prices. Check for clean optics and smooth focus. Only of interest as an extremely cheap way to get 400mm reach — optical quality is far behind any modern alternative. Fun for experimental photography but not practical for serious wildlife or sports work.
