Sony's professional A-mount telephoto zoom — 70-200mm f/2.8 with SSM motor and Nano AR coating.
The Sony 70-200mm f/2.8 G SSM II launched in 2013 as the updated professional telephoto zoom for Sony's A-mount system. The Mark II improved coatings with Nano AR technology and refined autofocus performance over the original G version.
Optically very good — sharp throughout the zoom range with constant f/2.8 aperture. Nano AR coating dramatically reduces flare and ghosting compared to the Mark I. SSM (Super Sonic Motor) provides fast, quiet autofocus. No in-lens stabilisation — relies on body SteadyShot.
Sony A-mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 1340g. Weather-sealed dust and moisture resistant construction. Tripod collar included. Minimum focus distance 120cm. G designation — Sony's premium tier below GM.
Available used at mid-range prices. A-mount is discontinued — the Sony FE 70-200mm f/2.8 GM II is the mirrorless successor. Adapts to E-mount via LA-EA adapters but native FE lenses have better AF. For existing A-mount users with SLT bodies, this remains excellent.
