Sony's A-mount super-tele Mark II — same as ID 1172, updated 70-400mm with improved AF.
The Sony 70-400mm f/4-5.6 G SSM II is the Mark II update of Sony's flagship A-mount telephoto zoom. It improved AF speed significantly over the Mark I — the SSM II designation indicates updated Supersonic Drive Motor algorithms.
Same G-series optical quality as the Mark I with dramatically improved AF speed — the main upgrade. The faster AF makes action tracking more practical. No in-lens stabilisation — relies on body SteadyShot. 70-400mm range.
Sony A-mount with 77mm filter thread. Approximately 1500g. G-series weather-sealed construction. Tripod collar. Full-frame coverage. SSM II — improved AF speed over Mark I.
Available used at mid-range to professional prices. A-mount is discontinued. The Mark II's AF improvement was meaningful for action use. Similar to or continuation of ID 1172. For A-mount SLT users wanting the best possible telephoto zoom.
