Sony's entry-level A-mount DSLR — the basic A230 for beginners.
The Sony A230 is an entry-level APS-C DSLR from 2009, one of the most basic cameras in Sony's A-mount lineup. Featuring a 10.2MP CCD sensor, it provided an affordable entry to DSLR photography with Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE body stabilisation. The A230 was positioned at the absolute budget end of Sony's SLR range.
Image quality from the 10.2MP CCD sensor is adequate for basic photography. The CCD sensor provides pleasant colour rendition. ISO performance is limited — usable to approximately ISO 800. The 9-point AF system is basic but functional. SteadyShot INSIDE provides body-based stabilisation with any A-mount lens — a significant advantage over unstabilised competitors.
Sony A mount. Weight is approximately 450 grams body only — lightweight for a DSLR. Build quality is basic consumer-grade plastic. The optical viewfinder provides the DSLR shooting experience. CompactFlash and Memory Stick media. Battery life is reasonable. No video capability — pre-DSLR video era for Sony.
Very cheap on the used market — often under £30. Check sensor, shutter, and body condition. Thoroughly outdated by modern standards. Only of interest at extremely low prices as a basic camera for learning or as a body for testing A-mount lenses. Modern entry-level mirrorless cameras are dramatically superior in every respect.
