Sony's ultra-basic A-mount DSLR — 14.2MP CCD at the absolute entry level of photography.
The Sony A290 (DSLR-A290) launched in 2010 as one of Sony's most basic A-mount DSLRs, using a 14.2MP APS-C CCD sensor. It was positioned as the absolute entry point — a step up from compact cameras for first-time buyers on a tight budget.
The 14.2MP APS-C CCD sensor delivers decent results in good light with pleasant CCD colour rendition. In-body SteadyShot works with all A-mount lenses — stabilising even unstabilised Minolta-era glass. 9-point AF system. 2.5fps burst. No video recording capability.
A-mount lens system. 2.7-inch fixed LCD. Built-in flash. In-body SteadyShot stabilisation for all compatible lenses. SD card slot. 456g — lightweight for a DSLR. The most basic specification in Sony's A-mount range.
Essentially free used. A-mount is discontinued by Sony — limiting future lens investment. 14.2MP CCD and no video recording feel extremely dated. Any modern camera dramatically outperforms it. Only useful for existing A-mount lens owners wanting the cheapest body available.
