The Sony Alpha A33 (2010) is a 14.2MP APS-C Translucent Mirror Technology (TMT) camera — Sony's unique architecture where a semi-transparent fixed mirror diverts a portion of light to a phase-detect AF sensor while the remainder passes to the imaging sensor, enabling continuous phase-detect AF during video recording and live view.

The A33's Translucent Mirror enables live view and video with full phase-detect AF speed — unlike reflex DSLRs that must switch to contrast-detect during live view. The trade-off is a small (~1/3 stop) light loss from the translucent mirror. This architecture directly preceded Sony's mirrorless strategy. All A-mount lenses are compatible. Compared to the A55, the A33 is the entry-level TMT body with fewer features.

Test continuous AF during video recording — this is the key differentiator. Check EVF for burn-in (OLEDs in early Sony TMT cameras had burn-in susceptibility). Test Translucent Mirror condition (inspect for debris on the fixed mirror). Test SteadyShot IS. Verify AVCHD video recording works.
