Sony's basic A-mount DSLR — the A330 with tilting LCD and SteadyShot.
The Sony Alpha A330 was released in 2009 as an entry-level APS-C DSLR in Sony's Alpha A-mount range, positioned below the A380 as the most affordable entry in the line. It uses Sony's SLT-predecessor design: a traditional reflex mirror rather than the translucent SLT mirror introduced with the A33 in 2010. The 10.2MP APS-C sensor and 3-inch tilting LCD were the core selling points, with the tilting screen enabling flexible shooting positions uncommon at this price tier. Minolta legacy A-mount lens compatibility extended the available lens catalogue beyond Sony's own range.
The 10.2MP APS-C CCD sensor pairs with the BIONZ processor. The 9-point phase-detection AF system provides reliable acquisition in adequate light. Burst shooting runs at approximately 2.5fps. No video recording. ISO 200-3200 native. The 3-inch 230,000-dot tilting LCD enables low-angle and high-angle composition without LiveView requiring the optical viewfinder. At approximately 468g with battery the body is compact for a DSLR. Single SD/SDHC slot. The BC-VM10 charger charges the NP-FM500H battery externally.
The tilting LCD was the A330's most useful practical feature at its price point — providing the low-angle and overhead shooting flexibility that required a higher-tier body in most competing systems. As a CCD sensor body, the A330 produces a rendering characteristic associated with CCD technology. Sony A-mount lens compatibility means Minolta Maxxum/Dynax lenses from the 1980s onward autofocus correctly on the A330 body, providing substantial used-lens availability beyond Sony's own range. At 10.2MP output is sufficient for A4 printing and digital delivery.
On the used market the Sony A330 is very affordable as a vintage entry APS-C DSLR. The CCD sensor and modest megapixel count limit its utility for demanding work but it functions cleanly as a learning camera or a back-up body. Check NP-FM500H battery condition — the cell is shared with several Sony professional bodies and spares are available. Test the tilting LCD mechanism for smoothness. Confirm the SD slot is undamaged. Compatible with all Sony Alpha A-mount and Minolta A-mount lenses with full AF and metering function.
