Budget Sony SLT with translucent mirror for 8fps burst and in-body stabilisation on a discontinued mount.
The Sony A58 was released in 2013 as a budget A-mount SLT body. Its translucent mirror allows continuous phase-detect AF during 8fps burst shooting — impressive for the price. The 20.1MP APS-C sensor delivers decent image quality.
High-ISO is usable to about ISO 3200. The translucent mirror costs roughly one-third stop of light. The 15-point AF with 3 cross-type sensors handles general subjects but struggles with fast action. Full HD video is included.
Sony A-mount with in-body SteadyShot — any A-mount lens gains stabilisation. Built-in EVF, articulating 2.7-inch LCD, and flash. Accepts all Sony A-mount and Minolta AF lenses. No Wi-Fi.
A-mount is discontinued. Used prices are very low. The Sony A6000 offers dramatically better AF, more lenses, and compact size at similar prices — making the A58 hard to recommend unless exploiting existing A-mount glass.
