Sony's mainstream full-frame hybrid — 33MP, 759-point AF, 4K 60p, dual cards, IBIS.
The Sony Alpha A7 IV was released in November 2021 as the fourth-generation A7-series standard model, upgrading from the A7 III's 24.2MP sensor to a 33MP BSI Exmor R CMOS while maintaining the practical hybrid versatility of the series. 759 phase-detection AF points cover approximately 94% of the sensor area with AI subject recognition. 4K/30fps records from the full sensor width via oversampled readout; 4K/60fps records in Super35 (APS-C) crop mode. 10-bit 4:2:2 is available internally.
The 33MP full-frame BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor pairs with the BIONZ XR processor. The AF system provides 759 phase-detection points with Real-time tracking and subject recognition for humans, animals, birds, insects, cars, and trains. Burst shooting runs at 10fps. 4K/30fps uses full sensor readout with no crop; 4K/60fps uses Super35 crop. 10-bit 4:2:2 records internally to either card slot. 5-axis IBIS. Battery life approximately 580 shots via rear LCD using the NP-FZ100, body weight approximately 658g with battery and card, dual card slots (CFexpress Type A and SD UHS-II).
The A7 IV bridges the gap between the A7 III's 24MP and the A7R IV's 61MP: the 33MP sensor provides meaningful crop headroom over 24MP while remaining manageable in file size compared to the A7R IV workflow. The 10-bit 4:2:2 internal video is a step beyond the A7 III's 8-bit output, enabling cleaner colour grading. The dual CFexpress Type A + SD slot configuration maintains SD compatibility while providing the faster CFexpress path for burst shooting and high-bitrate video.
On the used market the A7 IV is available at mid-range Sony FE mirrorless prices. Condition checks: IBIS operation, both card slot contacts (CFexpress A and SD), NP-FZ100 battery health, and weather sealing at port covers. The A7C II provides the same sensor in a compact body at similar prices. The NP-FZ100 is the standard Sony full-frame mirrorless battery. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount lenses.
