Sony's compact full-frame mirrorless in a rangefinder-style body with IBIS.
The Sony A7C launched in 2020 as Sony's most compact full-frame mirrorless camera, combining a rangefinder-style body with the A7 III's 24.2MP sensor and 5-axis IBIS. It targeted street photographers and travellers who wanted full-frame quality in the smallest possible body with a modern AF system.
Key features include the 24.2MP sensor, 693-point phase-detect AF with Real-time Eye AF, 5-axis IBIS, a flip-up touchscreen for selfies, 4K video, and a compact body barely larger than the APS-C A6600. The offset EVF and rangefinder styling distinguish it from the traditional A7 form factor.
The A7C proved that full-frame mirrorless could be genuinely compact. It is praised for image quality matching the A7 III in a smaller body. It is criticised for the single card slot, limited custom buttons, and the small offset EVF. The A7C II dramatically improved AF and added a 33MP sensor.
Good value used as the A7C II has reduced prices. Check IBIS operation, the flip-up screen hinge, and battery condition. The A7C remains an excellent compact full-frame option. The A7C II at a premium is the better buy for new purchases.
