Sony's compact full-frame mirrorless in a rangefinder-style body with IBIS.
The Sony Alpha A7C was released in September 2020 as a compact travel-oriented variant of the A7 III, integrating the same 24.2MP full-frame BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor and Real-time Eye AF into a body significantly smaller and lighter than the standard A7 III — closer in body size to Sony's APS-C A6000-series. The flip-out rear LCD replaced the tilting screen of the A7 III for improved vlogging and self-facing use. IBIS providing approximately 5 stops of compensation is built in.
The 24.2MP full-frame BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor pairs with the BIONZ X processor. Real-time tracking AF uses 693 phase-detection points covering approximately 93% of the sensor area with subject recognition for humans and animals. Burst shooting runs at 10fps. 4K video records at up to 30fps with a slight crop from the full sensor width; 1080p records without crop. 5-axis IBIS provides approximately 5 stops of compensation. Body weight approximately 509g with battery and card, single SD/SDHC/SDXC slot.
The A7C's practical proposition is the A7 III sensor and AF in the smallest full-frame mirrorless body available at launch — enabling full-frame image quality with a compact-body kit for travel and street photography. The flip-out LCD is a direct improvement over the A7 III's tilting design for self-facing video and low-angle work. The single card slot is the primary practical limitation versus the A7 III's dual SD-slot design for redundancy. Both cameras apply a 1.2x crop at 4K/30p with oversampled output; the A7 III additionally offers uncropped 4K at 24p, which the A7C does not.
On the used market the A7C is available at mid-range Sony full-frame prices. Condition checks: IBIS operation, flip-out screen hinge, single SD slot contacts, and NP-FZ100 battery health. The A7C II (2023) added a 33MP sensor and AI AF for improved real-time tracking at a higher price. The NP-FZ100 is the standard Sony full-frame mirrorless battery, available across the A7 III, A7 IV, A7R IV/V, A9 II, A1, and A9 III. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount lenses.
