Sony's original low-light specialist — 12.2MP full-frame with extraordinary high-ISO and 4K video.
The Sony Alpha A7S was released in 2014 as the video-specialist variant in the original A7-series, featuring a 12.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor optimised for extreme low-light performance. No IBIS. Internal video maximum is 1080/60fps (XAVC S). 4K video requires HDMI output to an external recorder — there is no internal 4K recording. NP-FW50 battery. At approximately 489g body with battery.
12.2MP full-frame CMOS sensor (low pixel density for high ISO). No IBIS. Internal video: 1080/60fps (XAVC S 50 Mbps), AVCHD, MP4. External 4K: HDMI output to external recorder only (no internal 4K — A7S II added internal 4K in 2015). NP-FW50 battery (modest capacity — shared with A6000 series). Approximately 489g body with battery. Sony FE full-frame mount.
The 12.2MP sensor at full-frame size provides the lowest pixel density of the A7-series, maximising individual photosite area for light capture — the A7S achieved ISO 409,600 extended, making it the primary tool for available-light video and documentary cinematography at launch. The external-only 4K limitation was addressed in the A7S II (2015), which added internal 4K recording.
On the used market the Sony A7S is affordable as the original low-light full-frame mirrorless. Condition checks: NP-FW50 battery health (modest capacity), HDMI port condition (primary 4K output path), sensor dust. No IBIS. No internal 4K. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount lenses.
