Sony's refined sports flagship with improved connectivity and professional workflow features.
The Sony Alpha A9 II was released in October 2019 as the second-generation A9, refining the sports and action flagship of the FE system rather than redesigning it. The 24.2MP stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor and core 20fps electronic shutter with full AF/AE tracking were carried over from the A9 (2017), while the A9 II added improved tracking algorithms, anti-flicker shooting, faster USB data transfer, and refined weather sealing. It remains Sony's dedicated sports and news reporting body — optimised for sequence capture rather than resolution or video.
The 24.2MP full-frame stacked Exmor RS CMOS sensor provides fast readout for the electronic shutter. The 693-point phase-detection AF covers 93% of the frame with continuous subject tracking. Electronic shutter burst runs at 20fps with full AF/AE; mechanical shutter at 10fps. 4K video records from oversampled full-frame readout. Battery life approximately 500 shots via EVF and 690 shots via LCD using the NP-FZ100, body weight approximately 678g with battery and card, dual SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots.
The A9 II's practical strengths are 20fps burst with silent electronic shutter and 93% PDAF coverage — a combination suited to court sports, wildlife in flight, and news photography where frame rate and tracking depth determine whether peak-action frames are captured. The silent electronic shutter is practical for ceremonies, performances, and sports venues where mechanical shutter noise is disruptive. Anti-flicker shooting synchronises the shutter to artificial light cycles for consistent exposure in stadium and arena environments.
The A9 II holds value as Sony's dedicated sports body. Condition checks: electronic shutter operation (confirm clean rolling shutter behaviour at 20fps), both SD slot contacts, weather sealing at body seams, and NP-FZ100 battery health. The Sony A1 (2021) provides a substantially higher-specification stacked sensor at a significantly higher price. The NP-FZ100 battery is shared across the A7 IV, A7R V, A7S III, and A6700 — spares are broadly available. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame and APS-C E-mount lenses.
