Sony's flagship A-mount SLT — the A99 with full-frame translucent mirror technology.
The Sony A99 was released in 2012 as Sony's flagship full-frame A-mount camera using their translucent mirror technology (SLT). The translucent mirror provides continuous phase-detect AF — even during video — at the cost of roughly 1/3 stop of light. A 24.3MP full-frame CMOS sensor with SteadyShot INSIDE provides excellent image quality.
Image quality is very good from the 24.3MP sensor with excellent dynamic range. The SLT translucent mirror enables continuous phase-detect AF during video and live view — a significant advantage in 2012. Dual AF systems — dedicated phase-detect and contrast-detect. 6fps burst shooting. Full HD 1080p video with continuous AF. GPS built-in.
Sony A mount. Weight is approximately 733 grams body only. Build quality is professional with magnesium alloy body and weather sealing. Dual card slots (MS/SD). The SteadyShot INSIDE stabilisation works with all A-mount lenses. The SLT technology means no optical viewfinder — EVF only, which was controversial for the flagship.
Available at low used prices — the A99 II and mirrorless A7/A9 series have reduced demand. Check sensor, EVF, and shutter. The translucent mirror technology and full-frame SteadyShot remain unique features. The A-mount decline makes this very affordable for a full-frame flagship. Adapts all A-mount lenses to E-mount via LA-EA5.
