Sony Cyber-shot DSC-F55E — 1999 swivel-lens compact, 2.1MP CCD, European PAL variant
The Cyber-shot DSC-F55E was the European version of Sony's F55, a late-1990s compact built around the swivel-lens design the F-series introduced, letting the lens barrel rotate independently of the body for high- and low-angle shots without awkward positioning.
It uses a 2.1-megapixel CCD sensor with a 3x optical zoom lens, framed either through the rotating lens unit's built-in viewfinder or a small rear LCD screen. Images save to Sony's proprietary Memory Stick media, and the camera runs on a rechargeable InfoLithium battery pack typical of Sony's compacts of the period.
The rotating lens body distinguished the F55E from conventional compacts of 1999, making self-portraits and unusual angles far easier without a separate flip screen, though the swivel hinge is also the part most prone to wear on cameras of this age, and resolution is modest by later standards.
As a collectible early digital compact, the F55E should be tested for smooth, click-free rotation of the lens barrel, a working LCD, and a Memory Stick slot that reads reliably, since replacement batteries and Memory Stick media are now specialist rather than mainstream purchases.
