Sony's full-frame compact with a fixed 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens and 42.4MP sensor.
The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1R II was released in October 2015 as the second-generation RX1R, combining a 42.4MP full-frame BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor with a fixed 35mm f/2.0 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens in the most compact full-frame camera available. Two features distinguish it from the RX1R original: a pop-up 2.36M-dot OLED electronic viewfinder — the first built-in EVF in the RX1 series — and a switchable optical low-pass filter that can be set to standard, reduced, or off, adjusting the trade-off between moiré suppression and fine-detail resolution in-camera.
The 42.4MP full-frame BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor — the same sensor as the Sony A7R II — pairs with the BIONZ X processor. The fixed 35mm f/2.0 Zeiss Sonnar T* lens is permanently attached and cannot be changed. The switchable OLPF provides three settings: standard (maximum moiré control), reduced, and off (maximum resolution). The pop-up EVF provides 2.36M-dot OLED framing for outdoor and bright-light shooting. 5fps continuous burst. 1080p video records at up to 60fps — no 4K. Battery life approximately 220 shots using the NP-BX1, body weight approximately 507g with battery and card.
The RX1R II's switchable OLPF is unique in the camera market: the ability to adjust the anti-aliasing filter strength in-camera allows the user to maximise resolution for subjects without repeating fine patterns while retaining moiré control when needed. The 42.4MP full-frame sensor in a pocketable fixed-lens compact produces image quality equivalent to the A7R II interchangeable-lens system. The pop-up EVF enables optical framing without a hot-shoe-mounted accessory.
On the used market the RX1R II is available at premium compact pricing, below its launch cost but still a premium above comparable interchangeable-lens bodies. Condition checks: switchable OLPF mechanism (test all three settings), pop-up EVF function, NP-BX1 battery health — shared with the RX100 series — and the fixed 35mm lens for any optical marks. No 4K video. Fixed lens; no interchangeable mount.
