The Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S80 was a mid-range AA-powered compact from May 2005, sharing its body and core specification with the DSC-S60 and the 2.5-inch-screen DSC-S90. Unusually for a budget S-series model, it offered a manual exposure mode alongside the usual automatic options.
Specification centres on a 4.1-megapixel 1/2.7-inch Super HAD CCD (2304x1728) and a 3x zoom covering 39-117mm equivalent at f/2.8-5.2. A 2-inch 115k-dot LCD handles framing, video is recorded at 640x480 30fps MPEG, storage is full-size Memory Stick, and power comes from two AA cells.
The AA power system and simple controls make it a practical starter digicam, and the manual mode gives students something to learn on. It is chunkier than the P-series pocket models but easier to grip, with typical mid-2000s CCD colour output.
AA power is a plus for used buyers since no proprietary charger is needed, but check the battery compartment for corrosion from cells left inside. Full-size Memory Stick media is the awkward part; cards are capacity-limited and need a compatible reader. Verify the flash charges and the LCD is free of bleed.
