Sony's 2005 enthusiast compact — 5.1MP 1/1.8in CCD, Carl Zeiss 38-114mm, manual mode, AA power
The Cyber-shot DSC-W5 was the 5-megapixel half of Sony's 2005 W-series pair, launched in February 2005 alongside the 7-megapixel DSC-W7 and sold in Japan as the DSC-W15. The W-series offered enthusiast-leaning features in a compact aluminium body at a mainstream price.
It combined a 5.1-megapixel 1/1.8-inch Super HAD CCD with a Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar 3x zoom covering 38-114mm equivalent at f/2.8-5.2. A 2.5-inch LCD and optical viewfinder aided composition, manual exposure control supplemented the auto modes, and 32MB of internal memory backed Memory Stick Duo/Pro Duo storage. Two AA batteries supplied power, with NiMH rechargeables included when new.
The relatively large sensor for its class, real manual mode and AA power make the W5 one of the more usable mid-2000s compacts today, popular with CCD-colour enthusiasts. The lens is slow at the long end and the viewfinder tiny, but general handling is brisk.
Inspect the AA contacts for corrosion, cycle the lens looking for stiffness or error messages, and verify the optical viewfinder is clear. Memory Stick Duo cards must be sourced separately as the format is discontinued, and check the LCD backlight for evenness on screens of this age.
