Sony's premium full-frame compact — 24.3MP with Carl Zeiss 35mm f/2, no low-pass filter variant.
The Sony DSC-RX1R launched in 2013 as the 'R' variant of the revolutionary RX1, removing the optical low-pass filter for maximum resolving power from the 24.3MP full-frame sensor. It paired this sensor with a fixed Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* 35mm f/2 lens in a compact body.
Image quality is exceptional — the full-frame sensor without OLPF delivers maximum detail rivalling interchangeable-lens cameras. The Zeiss 35mm f/2 Sonnar lens is optically superb. Manual focus ring on the lens barrel. Macro mode switches for close-up capability.
Compact metal body at 482g. No EVF built in — optional FDA-EV1MK hotshoe EVF. 3-inch fixed LCD. RAW shooting. WiFi and NFC. Multi-Interface Shoe. Micro-USB. The combination of full-frame sensor and Zeiss fixed lens was groundbreaking.
Available used at professional prices. The RX1R II improved with an EVF and faster AF. The Leica Q series is the main competitor with wider lens. The RX1R produces stunning images but the lack of EVF and high price limit appeal. For purists who want maximum image quality in minimum size.
