Sony's APS-C kit zoom with built-in SAM motor — basic 27-82.5mm equiv for A-mount entry DSLRs.
The Sony DT 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 SAM launched in 2009 as an updated kit zoom for Sony A-mount entry-level DSLRs. The SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) designation means the AF motor is built into the lens, enabling autofocus on bodies without a screw-drive motor.
Optical quality is basic — acceptable centre sharpness but soft at edges. The SAM motor is an improvement over the earlier body-driven DT 18-70mm, providing quieter and more reliable AF. DT designation means APS-C coverage only. No stabilisation in the lens — relies on body SteadyShot.
Sony A-mount with 55mm filter thread. Approximately 210g — very lightweight. APS-C only. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 25cm. Plastic construction including mount. Commonly bundled with A230, A330, A380, and similar bodies.
Very cheap used — typically included with camera bodies. A-mount is discontinued. The SAM motor is adequate but not fast. Any modern kit zoom vastly outperforms it. Only useful for existing A-mount camera owners needing a basic walkaround lens. Check for smooth zoom operation.
