Sony's affordable APS-C normal prime for A-mount, a budget-friendly 52mm equivalent option.
The Sony DT 35mm f/1.8 SAM was introduced in 2010 as an affordable fast prime for Sony's A-mount APS-C DSLRs and SLTs. Providing a 52mm equivalent field of view, it served as the go-to normal prime for cameras like the a58, a65, and a77, offering a significant step up from kit zoom sharpness at a modest price.
Sharpness is good from f/1.8 in the centre and very good across the frame by f/4. Bokeh is pleasant with seven rounded aperture blades. The SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) designation indicates a lens-based AF motor, though it is not the fastest or quietest. Chromatic aberration is well-controlled for the price class.
Sony A mount, DT designation meaning APS-C only. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 170 grams — very compact and light. Build quality is functional plastic with a metal mount. No weather sealing and no image stabilisation — Sony A-mount bodies with SteadyShot INSIDE provide body-based stabilisation.
Affordable on the used market though A-mount demand is declining as the system is discontinued. Check AF motor operation and clean optics. A solid performer for its era — Sony A-mount shooters wanting a fast normal prime have few alternatives. Can be adapted to Sony E-mount via the LA-EA5 adapter with full AF support.
