Sony's budget DX telephoto — the DT 55-200mm without SAM motor for body-drive AF.
The Sony DT 55-200mm f/4-5.6 is the basic non-SAM version of Sony's APS-C telephoto zoom for A-mount. Without the SAM lens motor, it relies entirely on the camera body's screw-drive AF motor. Covering 82-300mm equivalent, it provides basic telephoto reach. The DT designation confirms APS-C-only coverage.
Optical performance is basic. Centre sharpness is acceptable. The body-drive screw AF is noisier than the SAM version. Variable aperture limits low light. Adequate for casual daytime photography. Benefits from Sony's SteadyShot body stabilisation. Not designed for demanding photography — a basic starter telephoto.
Sony A mount, APS-C. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 305 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic. Screw-drive AF using body motor. The SAM version (ID 3532) is preferred for quieter lens-based AF. The A-mount system is discontinued.
Very cheap on the used market. Check AF and zoom. The SAM version is preferred. A basic telephoto for existing A-mount users. Not recommended for deliberate purchase — better A-mount telephoto options exist. Only of relevance bundled with a camera body.
