Sony's budget APS-C telephoto zoom for A-mount — the basic DT 55-200mm with SAM motor.
The Sony DT 55-200mm f/4-5.6 SAM was released in 2007 as a budget telephoto zoom for Sony A-mount APS-C cameras. Covering an 82-300mm equivalent range, it provided affordable telephoto reach for entry-level cameras like the a230, a290, and a330. The SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor) indicates a built-in lens motor rather than relying on body-drive AF.
Optical performance is basic. Centre sharpness is acceptable at shorter focal lengths and weakens towards 200mm. The variable aperture limits low-light performance. Adequate for casual daylight photography but not suitable for demanding work. The SAM motor provides functional but not particularly fast or quiet autofocus, an improvement over body-drive screwdriver AF.
Sony A mount, DT designation for APS-C only. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 305 grams — lightweight. Build quality is basic plastic. No image stabilisation — relies on Sony's SteadyShot INSIDE body-based stabilisation. No weather sealing. The A-mount system is discontinued, limiting future utility.
Very cheap on the used market given A-mount's declining demand. Check for smooth AF and zoom operation. The Sony DT 55-300mm offers more reach. With A-mount discontinued, this lens has limited appeal except for existing A-mount system owners. Adapts to E-mount via LA-EA5 adapter with full AF.
