Sony's compact APS-C kit zoom for NEX and Alpha E-mount cameras, offering stabilised 24-75mm equivalent range.
The Sony E 16-50mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS, also known as the SELP1650, launched around 2013 as a pancake-style power zoom kit lens for Sony's APS-C E-mount cameras. Its retractable design makes it one of the most compact standard zooms available.
Optical quality is acceptable for a kit lens but not remarkable — sharp enough in the centre but soft in corners especially at 16mm. The power zoom mechanism is smooth and useful for video. Optical SteadyShot stabilisation helps in low light.
Sony E mount for APS-C bodies. Covers 24-75mm equivalent. 40.5mm filter thread — an unusual size requiring specific filters. Just 116g and incredibly compact when retracted. Minimum focus distance 25cm allows close-up work.
Extremely common used as it was bundled with millions of Sony Alpha cameras. Very cheap. The retractable mechanism can develop faults — test zoom action thoroughly. The Sony E 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS offers much better range and quality.
