Sony's lightweight APS-C superzoom — 11x range with OSS stabilisation and internal zoom design.
The Sony E 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 LE OSS (2012) is a compact superzoom for Sony E-mount APS-C bodies. The LE (Lightweight Edition) designation indicates a slimmer, lighter design than the original 18-200mm — achieved partly through an internal zoom mechanism that keeps the barrel fixed.
Adequate centre sharpness at wide and mid focal lengths. Soft at 200mm wide open — stop down to f/8 for best results. OSS provides approximately 3-4 stops. Internal zoom — barrel does not extend. 460g.
Sony E mount, 62mm filter thread. APS-C only — 27-300mm equivalent. Internal zoom — barrel length constant. OSS optical stabilisation. 50cm minimum focus distance.
Common and affordable used. Check the OSS mechanism for smooth operation. The Tamron 18-200mm VC is lighter. Optical quality is a travel compromise — acceptable for convenience, not for pixel-peeping.
