Sony's original APS-C E-mount kit zoom from the NEX era, compact with optical stabilisation.
The Sony E 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS (SEL18-55) is the standard kit zoom for Sony APS-C E-mount bodies, released in 2010 alongside the NEX-3 and NEX-5 as one of the first lenses in the E-mount system. On APS-C bodies it covers a 27-82mm equivalent range — the standard wide-to-portrait field of view. Built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation was particularly relevant at launch for bodies without sensor-shift stabilisation; it remains useful on A6000-series bodies that lack IBIS.
The optical design uses 9 elements in 8 groups, including one aspherical element. The 49mm filter thread is shared with the E 55-210mm telephoto kit zoom, making filter carry-over practical across a standard two-lens Sony APS-C setup. At approximately 194g the lens is light enough that the combined body-and-lens weight on a compact APS-C body remains genuinely portable. A minimum focus distance of 0.25m enables close informal shooting on small subjects. Built-in Optical SteadyShot provides image stabilisation. Variable aperture runs from f/3.5 at 18mm to f/5.6 at 55mm; there is no weather sealing.
As the standard kit zoom for Sony APS-C the 18-55mm covers the most common shooting situations: landscapes, indoor events, portraiture, and everyday photography. OSS is effective for handheld static subjects in lower light on bodies without IBIS. Optical quality is good in the centre at mid-apertures; corners at 18mm wide open show characteristic softening that clears on stopping down. The lens performs identically across the Sony APS-C E-mount body range from early NEX bodies through the current A6700.
On the used market the E 18-55mm is the most common Sony APS-C kit lens and is available at very low prices, often bundled with used NEX and A6000-series bodies. Condition checks: OSS operation, zoom ring smoothness, and front element for cleaning marks. The Sony E 16-55mm f/2.8 G provides significantly better optical quality and a constant fast aperture at a substantially higher price; the Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 DC DN is a more affordable fast-aperture alternative. For budget-oriented kit zoom use the 18-55mm OSS remains adequate.
