Sony's tiny APS-C macro prime with 1:1 magnification and a 30mm focal length.
The Sony E 30mm f/3.5 Macro is one of the earliest E-mount lenses, launched in 2011. Providing true 1:1 magnification at a 45mm equivalent focal length, it brings macro photography to Sony APS-C mirrorless in a remarkably tiny package at just 138g.
Optical quality at the focus plane is sharp with good detail at all magnifications. The 9.5cm minimum focus distance means very close working distance, which can shadow small subjects. At f/3.5 it is slow for a prime but adequate for macro work.
Sony E mount in APS-C format, 49mm filter thread. The short 30mm focal length provides very close working distance. The Sony FE 90mm f/2.8 Macro G OSS offers better working distance on full-frame. The Sigma 30mm f/1.4 DC DN is the non-macro alternative.
Cheap used. Check AF at close focus distances and front element for scratches. The very close working distance is both a feature and limitation. An affordable entry into macro for Sony APS-C shooters.
