Sony's compact fast prime for APS-C E-mount, giving a versatile 52mm equivalent field of view.
The Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL35F18) was launched in 2013 as a compact fast prime for Sony's APS-C E-mount cameras. Providing a 52mm equivalent field of view, it sits in the versatile normal range ideal for everyday shooting, street photography, and environmental portraits on cameras like the a6000 series.
Sharpness is very good in the centre from f/1.8, becoming excellent across the frame by f/4. Bokeh is smooth and pleasant thanks to seven rounded aperture blades. The built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation is a significant advantage, providing roughly 4 stops of correction — especially useful on older a6000-series bodies that lack IBIS.
Sony E mount, APS-C format. Filter thread is 49mm. Weight is approximately 154 grams, keeping the package pocketable on compact a6000-series bodies. Build quality is decent with a metal mount. The lens has a manual focus ring but no physical aperture ring. Linear motor AF is quick and quiet.
Widely available used given the enormous popularity of Sony a6000-series cameras. Check for smooth AF operation and clean optics. Excellent value as an everyday prime — the combination of f/1.8 speed, OSS stabilisation, and compact size is hard to beat in the APS-C E-mount ecosystem.
