Sony's compact APS-C normal prime with OSS — 52.5mm equivalent at f/1.8, ideal as a first fast prime.
The Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL35F18) is an autofocus prime for Sony E-mount APS-C bodies, providing a 52.5mm full-frame equivalent perspective at f/1.8 with optical image stabilisation (OSS) built into the lens barrel. Released in 2012, it was one of Sony's early E-mount fast prime lenses. At 155g and 49mm filter thread it is compact. OSS provides stabilisation independent of body IBIS.
The optical design uses 8 elements in 6 groups including 1 ED and 2 aspherical elements. Seven rounded aperture blades. The 49mm filter thread is compact. At 155g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.30m. OSS optical stabilisation is lens-based. Internal focusing. f/1.8 maximum aperture. APS-C image circle.
The OSS in the 35mm f/1.8 provides stabilisation on older E-mount bodies that lack sensor-based IBIS — the NEX-3, NEX-5, and A6000 series from the pre-IBIS era. On newer A6xxx bodies with IBIS, the lens OSS and body IBIS operate cooperatively. The 52.5mm equivalent provides a near-normal perspective suited to street, documentary, and everyday photography. At f/1.8, adequate separation and low-light capability is provided.
On the used market the Sony E 35mm f/1.8 OSS is affordable as an APS-C E-mount fast prime. Condition checks: OSS engagement, AF motor response, 49mm front element for marks. The lens lacks weather sealing. Compatible with all Sony E-mount APS-C bodies; on full-frame FE bodies the APS-C image circle will vignette heavily at full-frame — APS-C crop mode required.
