Sony's stabilised APS-C portrait prime — the 75mm equivalent E 50mm f/1.8 with OSS.
The Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL50F18) is an APS-C portrait prime for Sony's E-mount mirrorless cameras. Providing a 75mm equivalent field of view, it is positioned as an affordable portrait lens for a6000-series shooters. The built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation is a notable advantage, compensating for the lack of IBIS on older Sony APS-C bodies.
Sharpness is good in the centre from f/1.8 and very good by f/2.8. Bokeh is smooth and pleasant thanks to seven rounded aperture blades. The f/1.8 aperture provides attractive subject isolation for portraits on APS-C. The OSS stabilisation provides roughly 3-4 stops of correction, useful for steadier handheld shooting in lower light conditions.
Sony E mount, APS-C optimised. Filter thread is 49mm. Weight is approximately 202 grams — lightweight and well-balanced on compact APS-C bodies. Available in both silver and black finishes. Build quality is basic plastic but functional. Linear motor AF is reasonably quick. No weather sealing on this consumer-grade lens.
Very affordable on the used market. Check for smooth AF and OSS operation. The 75mm equivalent makes it a natural portrait lens for Sony APS-C shooters. The Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN offers better optics but no stabilisation, while the Sony FE 50mm f/1.8 covers full frame but also lacks OSS.
