Sony's APS-C portrait prime with OSS — 75mm equivalent at f/1.8 with built-in stabilisation.
The Sony E 50mm f/1.8 OSS (SEL50F18) launched in 2011 as a budget portrait prime for Sony APS-C E-mount cameras. Providing 75mm equivalent at f/1.8, it offers effective subject separation for portraiture with built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation — unusual for a fast prime.
Optically decent — sharp from f/2.8 with acceptable performance at f/1.8. The OSS stabilisation is a genuine advantage on bodies without IBIS like the A6000 series. Autofocus uses an internal motor that is reasonably quiet. The 75mm equivalent is a flattering portrait focal length.
Sony E mount with 49mm filter thread. Weighs 202g — very compact. APS-C coverage only. No weather sealing. Minimum focus distance 39cm. 7 rounded aperture blades. Available in silver and black finishes. Metal mount with plastic barrel.
Common used and affordable. One of the few APS-C primes with built-in OSS — a significant advantage on non-IBIS bodies. The Sigma 56mm f/1.4 DC DN is sharper but lacks stabilisation. An ideal first portrait lens for Sony APS-C shooters on a budget.
