Sony's budget APS-C telephoto zoom for E-mount with optical stabilisation.
The Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS (SEL55210) is the standard telephoto kit zoom for Sony APS-C E-mount bodies, designed to complement the E 18-55mm kit zoom in a two-lens travel setup. On APS-C bodies the 82-315mm equivalent range provides reach for outdoor events, wildlife, and travel subjects. Built-in Optical SteadyShot stabilisation extends the range of usable handheld shots at telephoto focal lengths, particularly on bodies without IBIS such as the A6100 and A6400.
The optical design uses 13 elements in 9 groups, including two ED elements and two aspherical elements. The 49mm filter thread is consistent with the E 18-55mm kit zoom, making filter carry-over practical across a two-lens Sony APS-C setup. At 345g the lens is moderate in weight for a 210mm telephoto zoom — manageable alongside a compact Sony APS-C body for extended carry. Minimum focus distance of 1.0m suits the telephoto use case; primary subjects are typically well beyond this point. Seven aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering. Built-in Optical SteadyShot provides image stabilisation for handheld telephoto work. Variable aperture runs from f/4.5 at 55mm to f/6.3 at 210mm.
For outdoor photography the 55-210mm provides the reach that the 18-55mm kit zoom cannot: wildlife at distance, outdoor sports and events, and travel subjects where approaching closer is not possible. The 82-315mm equivalent range on APS-C covers most common outdoor telephoto situations. OSS is effective for static subjects at 210mm; at the long end handheld shots in adequate light are practical with stabilisation engaged. Optical quality is adequate through the mid-range; edge performance at 210mm wide open softens, consistent with telephoto zooms at this price tier.
On the used market the E 55-210mm is widely available and affordably priced. Condition checks: OSS engagement, zoom ring smoothness, and autofocus response at both focal length extremes. The Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS provides higher optical quality and extended reach at a substantially higher price. For budget-oriented telephoto coverage with a Sony APS-C kit the 55-210mm is an adequate and cost-effective choice.
