Sony's budget APS-C telephoto zoom for E-mount with optical stabilisation.
The Sony E 55-210mm f/4.5-6.3 OSS is Sony's entry-level telephoto zoom for APS-C E-mount mirrorless cameras, launched in 2010. Covering an 82-315mm equivalent range, it provides affordable telephoto reach for the NEX and later A6000-series cameras. It has been in continuous production for over a decade.
Optical quality is adequate with reasonable centre sharpness but soft corners, especially at the telephoto end. OSS provides optical stabilisation which compensates for the long focal lengths. Autofocus is workable but not fast by modern standards. Build is lightweight plastic and the lens extends considerably at 210mm.
Sony E mount in APS-C format, 49mm filter thread. This lens does not cover the full-frame image circle. The Tamron 70-300mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III RXD for Sony E offers more reach with better optics. The Sony E 70-350mm f/4.5-6.3 G OSS is a newer and significantly better Sony alternative.
Very cheap used. Check OSS operation, AF motor, and zoom barrel for looseness at the telephoto end. The lens is serviceable for beginners but most users will want to upgrade relatively quickly. The Tamron 70-300mm Di III is a strong upgrade option at a reasonable price.
