The Sony FDR-AX1 was Sony's first consumer/prosumer 4K XAVC camcorder, released in 2013, marking Sony's entry into the affordable 4K video production market. It uses a 1/2.3-inch Exmor R sensor and a 12× optical zoom lens, recording to XQD memory cards.

1/2.3-inch back-illuminated Exmor R sensor, 12× optical zoom (29.3–352mm equivalent), 4K XAVC recording to XQD cards, Sony Zeiss T* Vario-Sonnar lens, 3-axis optical SteadyShot stabilisation.

The FDR-AX1 represented accessible professional 4K video at its launch, used for documentary, corporate video, and event production. The Zeiss T* branded lens delivers good optical quality. XQD media for 4K is capable but XQD cards are more expensive than standard SD/CFexpress. A dated but functional 4K platform.
