Sony's flagship super-telephoto zoom with G Master optics and built-in OSS.

The Sony FE 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 GM OSS is Sony's flagship super-telephoto zoom, launched in 2017. As a G Master lens it delivers outstanding optical quality across a versatile 100-400mm range with built-in stabilisation. It became the go-to lens for Sony wildlife and sports photographers.

Optical quality is excellent with sharp results across the zoom range, characteristic of the G Master line. OSS provides approximately 5 stops of stabilisation. The DDSSM autofocus motor is fast and near-silent. Build is professional-grade with comprehensive weather sealing. Compatible with Sony's 1.4x and 2x teleconverters for extended reach.

Sony FE mount only, 77mm filter thread. The GM OSS II succeeded it with improved optics and lighter weight. The Sigma 100-400mm f/5-6.3 DG DN OS Contemporary offers a lighter and cheaper alternative. The Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD provides more reach.

Good value used as the GM II has reduced prices. Check OSS operation, AF speed and accuracy at 400mm, and weather seal integrity. The original GM remains an excellent lens. Test with 1.4x teleconverter if available to verify teleconverter compatibility.
