Sony's G Master macro with unique STF apodisation for ultra-smooth bokeh — plus 1:1 reproduction and OSS.
The Sony FE 100mm f/2.8 STF GM OSS (2017) combines true 1:1 macro with a unique STF (Smooth Trans Focus) apodisation element that produces the smoothest possible bokeh. It is two specialised lenses in one — a reference macro and a uniquely smooth portrait/bokeh tool.
The STF element gradually reduces light transmission toward the edges of the aperture, eliminating hard bokeh disc edges. True 1:1 macro. OSS stabilisation. G Master optics. The STF element reduces effective aperture for AF and metering — stated T5.6 at f/2.8.
Sony FE mount, 67mm filter thread. Weather sealed. 700g. The STF effect is most visible at intermediate distances — at extreme macro the effect diminishes. Floating focus mechanism for consistent sharpness at all distances.
Available used. Understand the STF tradeoff — the apodisation element costs light for AF and metering. Test macro performance and STF bokeh rendering at portrait distances. The Sony 90mm f/2.8 Macro G is a more conventional macro alternative.
