Sony's original FE ultra-wide zoom — constant f/4 from 16-35mm with Zeiss T* optics and OSS.
The Sony FE 16-35mm f/4 ZA OSS Vario-Tessar T* launched in 2014 as one of the first ultra-wide zooms for Sony full-frame E-mount. Zeiss T* coated with constant f/4 aperture and OSS stabilisation — it served as the workhorse ultra-wide for early A7-series users.
Optically good — sharp in the centre with adequate edge performance. Zeiss T* coating provides good flare control. OSS stabilisation is unusual for an ultra-wide and provides practical benefit. Constant f/4 maintains consistent exposure throughout.
Sony FE mount with 72mm filter thread. Weighs 518g. Dust and moisture resistant. OSS stabilisation. Minimum focus distance 28cm. Zeiss Vario-Tessar T* designation. Internal zoom design.
Available used at mid-range prices. The Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM and GM II are sharper and faster. The PZ 16-35mm f/4 G adds power zoom. The original Vario-Tessar remains a capable f/4 ultra-wide at reduced used prices. Check for smooth OSS operation.
