Sony's compact standard zoom — the Zeiss-branded 16-70mm f/4 for APS-C E-mount cameras.
The Sony Vario-Tessar T* E 16-70mm f/4 ZA OSS (SEL1670Z) was released in 2014 as Sony's premium APS-C standard zoom. Covering a 24-105mm equivalent range with a constant f/4 aperture, Zeiss T* coating, and OSS stabilisation, it positioned itself as the walk-around lens for serious a6000-series photographers who wanted more than kit zoom quality.
Optical performance is good with some caveats. Centre sharpness is very good from f/4. The T* coating provides excellent contrast. OSS stabilisation is effective. The 24-105mm equivalent range is versatile. However, corner sharpness is a known weakness, particularly at wider focal lengths. Despite the Zeiss branding, it does not match the best Zeiss-quality expectations.
Sony E mount, APS-C. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 308 grams — compact for the range and specification. Build quality is good with a metal barrel. OSS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. The constant f/4 aperture maintains consistent exposure throughout the zoom range. Zeiss T* coating is the genuine article.
Available on the used market at moderate prices. Check OSS operation and AF function. Despite the corner sharpness criticism, it remains one of the most versatile APS-C zooms for Sony E-mount. The constant f/4 and OSS combination is practical. The Tamron 17-70mm f/2.8 Di III-A VC RXD offers a faster alternative.
