Sony's compact fast ultra-wide prime — the FE 20mm f/1.8 G for landscape and astrophotography.

The Sony FE 20mm f/1.8 G (SEL20F18G) was released in 2020 as Sony's compact fast ultra-wide prime. The G designation indicates Sony's premium lens tier. At 20mm f/1.8, it provides a dramatic wide-angle perspective with enough speed for astrophotography and low-light work in a remarkably compact and lightweight package.

Optical performance is excellent. Sharpness is very good from f/1.8 and outstanding by f/2.8. The G-class optical design provides excellent coma control — critical for astrophotography where point light sources must remain tight. Dual XD linear motors provide fast, precise, and silent autofocus. Bokeh is smooth for the rare occasions shallow DOF is used at 20mm.

Sony FE mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 67mm — accepts standard filters. Weight is approximately 373 grams — remarkably light for a fast ultra-wide. Build quality is good with dust and moisture resistance. Focus hold button on the barrel. The close minimum focus distance of 19cm enables dramatic close-up perspectives.

Good availability on the used market. Check AF and clean optics. An outstanding ultra-wide for Sony shooters — the combination of G-class optics, fast aperture, compact size, and excellent coma control makes it one of the best wide-angle primes available. The Sigma 20mm f/1.4 Art offers more speed; the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM goes wider.
