Sony's original G Master standard zoom — constant f/2.8 from 24-70mm with outstanding optics for Sony FE.
The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM (SEL2470GM) was released approximately 2016 as the first-generation G Master constant f/2.8 standard zoom for Sony FE full-frame bodies. Eighteen elements in 13 groups including extreme aspherical (XA), Super ED, and ED elements. Nine circular aperture blades. At 886g and 82mm filter thread it is substantial. 0.38m MFD. The GM II (2022) followed at 695g — 191g lighter.
The optical design uses 18 elements in 13 groups including 1 extreme aspherical (XA), 2 aspherical, 1 Super ED, and 1 ED element. Nine circular aperture blades. The 82mm filter thread. At 886g the lens is substantial. Minimum focus distance of 0.38m. 3 linear motors for fast, quiet AF. Aperture ring. Constant f/2.8 aperture. Full-frame coverage.
The GM first generation established the G Master optical standard for Sony FE: the XA element corrections provide wide-open sharpness and aberration control across the full-frame field at constant f/2.8 across the zoom range. The 886g weight was a common complaint for daily carry; the 2022 GM II addressed this with a 191g reduction. For photographers with the first generation the optical output remains G Master tier.
On the used market the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM Gen 1 is available at established G Master pricing. Condition checks: linear AF motor response, 82mm front element for marks, aperture ring operation. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame bodies; on APS-C E-mount bodies provides 36-105mm equivalent.
