Sony's first full-frame standard zoom, a Zeiss-branded f/4 covering 24-70mm.
The Sony FE 24-70mm f/4 ZA OSS Vario-Tessar T* was one of Sony's earliest FE-mount lenses, launched in 2013 alongside the original A7. As a Zeiss-branded zoom with optical stabilisation it offered a premium standard zoom at a moderate price, covering the essential 24-70mm range for the new full-frame mirrorless system.
Optical quality is good with sharp centre performance and Zeiss T* coating providing excellent contrast and flare resistance. Corner sharpness is reasonable but not exceptional. OSS provides approximately 4 stops of stabilisation. Autofocus is adequate but noticeably slower than later Sony GM lenses. Build is metal and plastic with a quality feel.
Sony FE mount only, 67mm filter thread. The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM and GM II offer wider apertures at much higher prices. The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD undercuts both with a faster aperture at a lower price but starts at 28mm not 24mm. The Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 DG DN Art is another popular alternative.
Reasonable value used. Check OSS operation, AF speed, and zoom ring smoothness. The lens is showing its age against newer alternatives but remains optically capable. Best suited to A7-series users who want a compact full-range zoom with stabilisation at a moderate price.
