Sony's ultra-compact retractable kit zoom for full-frame A7C and A7C II.

The Sony FE 28-60mm f/4-5.6 was released in 2020 as the kit zoom for the Sony A7C and later A7 IV, designed as a compact retractable lens optimised for travel with full-frame FE-mount bodies. The retractable barrel collapses to a very short length for transport, extending to operating position when powered on. At 167g and 40.5mm filter thread it is the smallest and lightest FE-mount zoom, enabling a genuinely compact full-frame travel kit with the A7C.

The optical design uses 8 elements in 7 groups. Seven rounded aperture blades produce acceptable bokeh. The 40.5mm filter thread is unusually small for a full-frame zoom. At 167g the lens is the lightest FE-mount zoom available. Minimum focus distance of 0.30m. The retractable barrel requires extending before shooting — not suited for quick-draw photography. Variable aperture from f/4 at 28mm to f/5.6 at 60mm. The 28-60mm range covers wide-angle through short standard — shorter at the telephoto end than the 24-70mm alternatives.

The FE 28-60mm's practical proposition is enabling a full-frame kit in the smallest and lightest possible form. For travel photography where the full-frame sensor is the quality target and size is the primary constraint, the 28-60mm kit paired with the A7C or A7C II creates a smaller full-frame kit than any alternative FE-mount pairing. The retractable design is the trade-off: immediate readiness after storage requires a few seconds to extend and power on. The 60mm long end limits reach compared to a 70mm or 105mm.

On the used market the FE 28-60mm is available at affordable prices. Condition checks: retractable barrel mechanism for smooth extension and retraction without resistance, 40.5mm filter thread for damage, and front element. The Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II provides f/2.8 across the standard range at significant weight and cost premium. The Sony FE 24-105mm f/4 G OSS provides a longer range. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame bodies and APS-C E-mount bodies (in Super35 crop mode).
