Sony's compact full-frame 28mm f/2 — affordable wide-angle prime for FE mount with conversion lens options.
The Sony FE 28mm f/2 launched in 2015 as an affordable compact wide-angle prime for Sony full-frame E-mount. It uniquely supports optional conversion lenses — a 0.76x ultra-wide converter (21mm) and a fisheye converter — adding versatility to the compact prime.
Optically good — sharp from f/4 with decent performance at f/2. Some field curvature visible on flat subjects. The f/2 aperture provides useful low-light capability and background separation at 28mm. Linear motor AF is quiet and fast enough for general use.
Sony FE mount with 49mm filter thread. Weighs just 200g — very compact. Minimum focus distance 29cm. No weather sealing. 7 rounded aperture blades. Bayonet mount on front accepts optional conversion lenses (sold separately).
Available used at budget prices — excellent value for a full-frame 28mm. The conversion lens option is unique — the 21mm ultra-wide is particularly useful. Some field curvature is the main optical criticism. The Sony FE 24mm f/2.8 G is sharper but narrower and more expensive.
