Sony's Zeiss-branded 35mm f/1.4 for FE mount — the original fast wide prime for Sony full-frame mirrorless.
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA Distagon T* launched in 2015 as Sony's first premium 35mm prime for full-frame E-mount. Using the Zeiss Distagon optical formula with T* coating, it delivered the wide-angle standard prime that early A7-series adopters needed.
Optically good — sharp from f/2 with pleasant Distagon rendering at f/1.4. The T* coating controls flare effectively. Autofocus uses a direct-drive SSM motor — adequate but not as fast as newer XD linear motor designs. Good for both stills and video work.
Sony FE mount with 72mm filter thread. Weighs 630g. Dust and moisture resistant construction. Minimum focus distance 30cm. 9 rounded aperture blades. Focus hold button on barrel. Aperture ring with click/de-click switch.
Available used at mid-range prices. The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM succeeded it with better optics and faster AF. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 DG DN Art is also sharper and lighter. Still a capable lens but newer alternatives have overtaken it. Good used value as prices dropped after the GM launch.
