Sony's compact fast 35mm prime — note: this is likely the SEL35F18F without OSS, not the APS-C version.
The Sony FE 35mm f/1.8 (SEL35F18F) was released in 2019 as Sony's compact full-frame 35mm prime. Note that the listing includes OSS but this full-frame FE version does not have optical stabilisation — the OSS-equipped version is the APS-C E 35mm f/1.8. This lens covers full frame with a fast f/1.8 aperture in a lightweight, affordable package.
Optical performance is very good. Sharpness is excellent from f/1.8, significantly better than the older Zeiss 35mm f/2.8 ZA. Nine circular aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. Linear motor AF is fast and silent. The lens is well-corrected for both stills and video with minimal focus breathing. An outstanding everyday prime for Sony full-frame shooters.
Sony FE mount, full-frame. Filter thread is 55mm. Weight is approximately 280 grams — very compact. Build quality is good with dust and moisture resistance. No OSS stabilisation — relies on Sony's in-body IBIS. The focus hold button and AF/MF switch add practical functionality. Excellent balance on a7C and a7 series bodies.
Good availability on the used market at reasonable prices. Check AF operation. One of the best compact 35mm primes for Sony full-frame — the combination of sharpness, AF speed, size, and price is hard to beat. The Sony FE 35mm f/1.4 GM is the premium upgrade. The Sigma 35mm f/1.4 Art offers more speed at greater size.
